Universal Music Publishing Group has arranged a deal to purchase Bob Dylan’s entire songwriting catalog – over 600 songs spanning over a period of over 60 years. From Blowin’ in the Wind to “Murder Most Foul”. The record company is contractually barred from revealing how much they paid for the deal. It is reported, however, to be a nine-figure deal of over $200 million.
We can only wonder, what will be the span of the use of his work? Commercials? TV? Movies?
Dylan is 79 years old. He mixed folk music, rock and roll, and poetry and he was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2016.
Dylan has sold more than 125 million records worldwide and has been covered by everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Jeff Buckley, The Birds, and Guns N’ Roses. His songs have been recorded over 6,000 times, according to Universal.
