For the first time in 17 years, Rolling Stone has updated their iconic list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
The list was voted on by over 250 artists, writers and others involved in the music world.
Each had to choose from a list of almost 4,000 songs. This was all done to re-determine what the top 500 are. The first list was made in 2004 and obviously much has changed since then.
Some of the top spots on the list contain more hip hop, modern, country, indie, country, indie rock, Latin, pop, reggae and R&B than the original version, and nearly half of the added songs did not previously hold a spot.
The much valued first spot goes to Aretha Franklin for her version of “Respect,” which was originally recorded by Otis Redding. Recently the classic recording has seen a surge in popularity following Frankin’s new biopic of the same name.
The second spot on the list goes to Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power”; with
Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” coming in at number three followed by Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” at number four and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” to round out the top 5.
One would think Dylan’s tune “The Times They are A-Changin” would have been more fitting as with half the songs from the first list gone things are definitely different.
To view the complete list you would have to go to the Rolling Stone website but you may be shocked to see what was added and what was taken away. We would like to ask our fans – what would be your “top five” list?
