The growing wildfire crisis in Canada has led to a wave of air quality alerts along the eastern coast of the United States, resulting in the cancellation of various outdoor events. Among these is Chris Stapleton’s Syracuse, New York, concert initially planned for Thursday.
The country star’s team issued a statement on Instagram Wednesday evening, “Owing to the worsening air quality in and around Syracuse, the performance scheduled for tomorrow at the St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview will be postponed. All tickets bought for the original date will be valid for the rescheduled date.”
Followers were assured of an update concerning the postponed event by midday Friday, June 9. The escalating wildfires in Canada have disrupted numerous sports and entertainment events across New York.
Canada is currently bracing for what could be its most catastrophic wildfire season to date, driven by an enduring drought and high temperatures. Wildfire occurrences this year have exceeded the typical average by more than tenfold. In May, wildfires ravaged over 6.6 million acres, an area almost equivalent to Massachusetts.
Canadian officials, in a recent wildfire forecast, predicted a persistent rise in the risk of wildfires throughout most of Canada in June and July due to warm and dry conditions.
The national crisis was addressed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a Monday news conference, “These are daunting times for many, not just in Alberta, but across the country, including the Atlantic, the North, and Québec.”
William Barrett, the American Lung Association’s National Senior Director of Clean Air Advocacy, advised on CNN, “If you can see or smell smoke, be aware that you’re exposed. It’s vital to stay indoors during periods of high pollution and to monitor your health and any emerging symptoms.”
