Confession time: I wasn’t blown away by the first Wicked movie. Yeah, it had its moments, but it didn’t exactly melt my cynical, rock-n-roll heart. That said? The sequel looks like it might finally land the broomstick upright. I’ve always had a soft spot for the whole Wizard of Oz universe — ruby red shoes, flying monkeys, dark witches with attitude — the whole vibe just works.
So here we are: Wicked: For Good is set to drop its soundtrack the same day the movie lands in theaters — November 21. And for those who think this is just a Broadway rerun with glitter, think again. Composer Stephen Schwartz slid in two brand-new tracks that weren’t on the stage score.
- Cynthia Erivo (aka the new Elphaba) gets the big emotional ballad, “No Place Like Home.” She even helped write it — so yeah, expect something raw and personal.
- Ariana Grande (Glinda) floats in with “The Girl in the Bubble.” If that doesn’t scream Glinda’s aesthetic, I don’t know what does.
The rest of the album brings the heavy hitters: As Long As You’re Mine, No Good Deed, and of course For Good, the one-two punch finale with Erivo and Grande. Jeff Goldblum even pops in as the Wizard on Wonderful, because apparently this soundtrack wasn’t already weird enough in the best way.
Here’s the kicker: the first Wicked soundtrack went No. 2 on the Billboard 200 — the best debut ever for a big-screen stage musical. So yeah, this sequel album has some giant ruby slippers to fill. But with Ariana’s pipes, Cynthia’s powerhouse voice, and Schwartz dusting off new spells, this thing might actually hit harder than the first.
