The iconic soundtrack from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic, The Sound of Music, is set to make a grand comeback with an array of refreshed editions, scheduled for a December 1 release. Fans of this age-old musical marvel can anticipate new enhanced, remixed, and remastered formats.
The highlight among these is the opulent Super Deluxe Edition, which unveils over 40 unreleased tracks, encompassing 11 exclusive alternate takes from the 1965 monumental film. This edition also presents a previously unheard version of “Prelude / The Sound of Music,” which had Julie Andrews, the film’s luminary, at the helm.
One of the remarkable features of this reissue is the inclusion of every musical fragment from the film in the Super Deluxe Edition. This means classics like “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” are all set to grace listeners’ ears anew.
Notably, The Sound of Music soundtrack not only topped the Billboard 200 chart in 1965 but also held its place in the top 10 for an impressive 109 weeks, securing its place in the annals of chart history. In 2015, it was lauded by Billboard as the all-time chart-topping soundtrack.
Craft Recordings has orchestrated the reissue, providing enthusiasts with diverse format choices: a physical four-CD/one-Blu-ray audio boxed set, digital download, two-CD Deluxe Edition, and a three-LP vinyl collection. This release also offers a unique colored vinyl pressing in a “Picnic Meadow Green” shade, restricted to 500 global copies.
The reissue has been enhanced from the original multi-track tapes and comes with fresh liner notes penned by cinema expert Mike Matessino. It’s a collaborative masterpiece that spanned across the breadth of Concord, with departments working in perfect harmony to produce this classic.
Sig Sigworth, president at Craft Recordings and chief catalog officer at Concord, remarked on the dedication involved in this project, expressing his delight at introducing a refreshed soundtrack experience for The Sound of Music admirers globally. Echoing these sentiments, Imogen Lloyd Webber from Concord Theatricals paid homage to the sheer dedication behind the project, envisaging it as a timeless treasure.
A comprehensive breakdown of each album version and track details can be found on the Craft Recordings website.
