Anti-Hero, the music video for one of the songs off of Taylor Swift’s new album Midnight, has been edited after receiving backlash for being “fatphobic.” The video, which was released in the middle of the night without any warning, features Swift’s friend and collaborator Todrick Hall. In the original version of the video, Hall is seen struggling to fit into various outfits and eventually gives up and falls to the ground. After receiving criticism for promoting negative stereotypes about plus-size people, Swift edited the video so that Hall is able to put on the clothing and dance freely. Despite the edit, some critics are still calling the video fatphobic, saying that it relies on harmful jokes about plus-size people. However, others have come to Swift’s defense, saying that the video is simply a light-hearted friend story and should not be taken so seriously. Whatever your opinion on the matter, it’s clear that Anti-Hero has sparked a conversation about how plus-size people are represented in popular culture.
