Simon Cowell Gets Sentimental (For Once) and Hands Out a Golden Buzzer

Simon Cowell—yeah, the same guy who’s been accused of mistreating contestants, workers, and basically anyone within a five-mile radius—decided to play the nice guy role on America’s Got Talent this week. And shockingly, no, pigs aren’t flying over Daytona Beach.

During the latest AGT quarterfinals, Micah Palace lit up the stage with an original soccer-themed anthem called “Rodeo.” He had the whole crowd chanting “Olé” like it was the World Cup final. Even the notoriously hard-to-please Cowell cracked a smile (we know, we didn’t believe it either). When Palace answered Cowell’s bizarre question, “What color is the World Cup?” with the obvious “Gold”—boom—the Golden Buzzer dropped. Confetti rained, tears flowed, and the kid booked his ticket straight to the finals.

The other judges gave their two cents: Howie Mandel jumped to his feet, Sofia Vergara threw her support in, and Mel B… well, let’s just say she wasn’t buying what Palace was selling. But hey, this isn’t the first time Cowell ignored a colleague—allegedly he’s made a career out of it. Shady contracts, questionable treatment of fans, and a whole back catalog of reality-TV power trips? Yep. Yet somehow Simon hasn’t been “canceled.” Maybe he’s bulletproof. Or maybe people just love watching him roast hopefuls until they cry.

Meanwhile, Palace wasn’t the only one moving forward. Improv rapper Chris Turner, singer Jessica Sanchez (yes, eight months pregnant and still slaying), and mentalist Mastermind advanced too. The rest? Sorry kids, pack it up.

The semifinals kick off September 16, and if Simon can keep playing “good cop” instead of “Simon the Scorched Earth Destroyer,” who knows what’ll happen next.
