Just when you thought Robert Smith might take a well-deserved victory lap after Songs of a Lost World topped charts, the gothic rock legend drops yet another bombshell: two more Cure albums are on the horizon. That’s right—Smith is in full creative overdrive, and fans are here for it.
Speaking with Absolute Radio’s Danielle Perry, Smith shared that a “companion” album to Songs of a Lost World is “pretty much ready to go” and hinted at an even more intriguing third project. “The third one is very odd, actually—random, late-night studio stuff. Some of it is brilliant,” he teased. While the first album was steeped in emotional depth, its follow-up will explore lighter themes. As for the third? Expect a dose of classic Cure experimentation.
The Cure has been riding high this year, with Songs of a Lost World becoming their first U.K. No. 1 album since 1992’s Wish. Across the pond, it claimed a stunning debut at No. 4 on the Billboard 200—their highest U.S. ranking in over 30 years—and topped a slew of other charts, including Top Album Sales and Vinyl Albums. The album has solidified their timeless status in the music world, showing that their signature melancholy still resonates deeply.
For fans craving even more, the band has released a live album, Songs of a Live World, capturing their release-day performance of the new record alongside iconic hits. And Smith, ever the perfectionist, isn’t slowing down. “The reaction to the new music has been incredible,” he said. “It’s been lovely to feel all the love. I don’t want it to end.”
Well, Robert, neither do we.
