In a surprising move, the classic ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ has been excluded from the latest rendition of Queen’s Greatest Hits compilation. This song, dating back to 1978 and penned by the legendary Brian May, was once a fun tribute to curvy women and made waves in its time. Lines like ‘fat bottomed girls, you make the rockin’ world go round’ resonated with fans and became iconic.
The initial 1981 Greatest Hits album proudly showcased this number alongside timeless anthems like ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘We Will Rock You’. Yet, the modern release on Yoto, a contemporary audio platform targeting younger demographics, surprisingly omitted it. This absence has stirred discussions within the music circles.
A source familiar with the industry remarked, “This has been the buzz among us. It’s baffling why a song, fun and good-spirited in nature, is now deemed not fit for our times. This seems like an overzealous approach to being woke. Instead of sidelining it, why not celebrate diverse body types as society is pushing for? It’s truly perplexing.”
The song, originally from Queen’s ‘Jazz’ album, has historically spurred conversations about its appropriateness. However, Brian May clarified the song’s genesis, pointing out that it was composed keeping the flamboyant lead, Freddie Mercury, in mind. Reflecting on the song in 2008, Brian commented, “I wrote it with Fred in mind… he did have a fondness for fat bottomed girls… or boys.”
Interestingly, the original cover art for the song stirred controversy. It depicted a minimally dressed woman on a bike, coinciding with its single release, ‘Bicycle Race’. Due to some outlets’ hesitation to display it, a modified version with added underwear on the cyclist was introduced.
