At 81, Paul McCartney demonstrates the vigor of an artist in their prime, with the release of what’s heralded as the Beatles’ “last” song, “Now And Then.” This track, a labour of love over four decades in the making, has materialized into something McCartney describes as “kind of magical.”
In a heartfelt conversation with BBC Radio 1, McCartney conveyed the profoundness of the experience. “Singing with John again, after all these years, was incredibly special. It’s as if he was right there with us, and for a moment, the years melted away,” he said.
The beginnings of “Now And Then” trace back to a Lennon demo, echoing in the halls of New York’s Dakota Building in the ’70s. McCartney, along with George Harrison and Ringo Starr, initially tried to breathe life into the track in the ’90s, only to find the recording quality too deteriorated. It wasn’t until the innovative MAL audio technology, developed by Peter Jackson’s WingNut Films, that the Beatles could reunite musically.
The orchestration of the track was a collaborative effort, with Giles Martin, Paul, and Ben Foster weaving in string arrangements to complement the contributions of all four Beatles members, crafting what is now presented as their final record.
The song has seen a triumphant debut in the UK, soaring to the top of the charts and capturing the hearts of Beatles enthusiasts and new listeners alike.
McCartney also reflects on the band’s experimental spirit, which resonates with the use of AI in the song’s creation. “The Beatles were always about pushing boundaries and embracing the new. This project with Peter has been no different, it’s been an alchemy of the past and the future,” he noted.
Additionally, McCartney reminisced about his recent performance at the Glastonbury Festival, highlighting the unity and joy of shared musical moments in times of adversity.
The Beatles’ “Now And Then” stands not just as a song, but as a bridge between eras, testament to the band’s enduring legacy and the continual innovation in music.
