Director Peter Jackson got it back.
The “Lord of the Rings” and King Kong director has been sifting through 56 hours of previously unseen footage of The Beatles rehearsing and horsing around from their final months playing together. Those precious moments led up to their infamous concert on the rooftop of Apple Corps headquarters on Savile Row in January of 1969. This is the stuff all Beatles fans have been waiting for.
Just weeks after the 40th anniversary of John Lennon’s untimely demise Jackson is giving fans a “sneaky preview,” as he called it, to the film “The Beatles: Get Back.” This is must-see tv for sure as it shows the boys in rare form and actually having fun.
The unearthed footage was salvaged from Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s long lost “Let It Be,” a 1970 television documentary charting the squabbles and tension in the lead-up to the band’s final album and concert, to a lukewarm reception. One could hardly tell that there was so much tension within the band after seeing some of the banterings that was going on.
There are rumors galore that surviving members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr blocked the release of the doc, complaining that it featured frontman John Lennon, and his wife Yoko Ono too prominently.
Image that? One thing is for sure this will go down as some of the biggest old footage ever released as fans still can’t seem to get enough of the greatest rock band in the history of music.
