In a recent interview with VladTV’s Gloria Velez, singer and father-of-seven, Ne-Yo, voiced his opinions on parenting transgender children and expressed concerns over minors receiving gender-affirming care.
Before diving into the topic, Ne-Yo emphasized, “I have no issue with LBG… You love who you love, you do what you do.” However, he expressed his traditionalist views saying, “I just personally come from an era where a man was a man and a woman was a woman.”
He further questioned the autonomy given to young children, asking, “When did it become a good idea to let a 5-year-old… make a life-changing decision for themselves? I don’t understand.”
Velez added her own perspective to the conversation, implying surgical intervention for transgender youth, to which Ne-Yo responded by suggesting children’s understanding of gender might be superficial.
It’s essential to note that major health organizations like the American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, and American Psychological Association recognize the importance and safety of gender-affirming care for trans youth. Such care doesn’t typically involve surgical interventions for minors. Instead, it emphasizes gender expression, changing pronouns and names, puberty blockers, and for older teenagers, possibly hormone treatment.
Responding to the media’s portrayal of his comments, Ne-Yo clarified on his official Instagram, “I CONDEMN NO ONE… I stated my opinion on a matter and that’s that… Meanwhile, I love everybody.”
Interestingly, in 2018, Ne-Yo had shown support for the LGBTQ+ community. Commenting on the removal of Amanda Lepore from Travis Scott’s Astroworld album cover, he had stated the LGBTQ+ community deserves the same respect as everyone else.
The award-winning artist released his latest album, Self Explanatory, in July 2022. Ne-Yo’s full conversation with Velez is available for viewing below.
