Missy Elliott, diving into her treasure trove of memories, revisited the making of her legendary video “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly).” She amusingly recollected how she had to step out in her blown-up inflatable suit, which posed unexpected challenges.
“In a hilarious twist, I had to rush to a Brooklyn gas station to inflate this suit, but it got so huge I couldn’t fit into the car! So, imagine me strolling back to the set on the Brooklyn streets in this ensemble,” Elliott shared on X (previously Twitter), as she commented on Rolling Stone‘s nod, ranking her video as the top pick in their 150 all-time best hip-hop music videos. “People driving by probably thought I’d lost my marbles.”
In a candid behind-the-scenes clip, we see Missy, aided by her crew, sprinting in her gleaming black attire. “Was super hilarious! Curious if anyone in Brooklyn spotted me that day, swaggering in that super warm suit. And if you watch closely, the video shows the suit going flat after my epic walk,” she chuckled.
Despite the challenges to keep the suit inflated, Elliott mentioned, “We were tight on funds, so we included even the scenes where the suit had lost air. Quite the street-style touch, if you ask me.”
Despite the wardrobe hiccups, “The Rain” track, coupled with “Sock It 2 Me,” soared, securing the No. 4 spot on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, solidifying Elliott’s iconic status in the industry.
