For someone who literally gave us the “Best of Both Worlds,” it turns out Miley Cyrus was stuck in a one-sided deal with Disney for over a decade.
During a recent appearance on The Ringer podcast, the now 32-year-old singer spilled some behind-the-scenes tea that left fans both furious and not entirely shocked. According to Cyrus, she wasn’t legally allowed to perform any songs from her Hannah Montana era after the series wrapped in 2011. You read that right. One of the biggest entertainment empires on Earth basically told Miley, “Thanks for the billion-dollar franchise, but keep your mouth shut.”
“It’s not like I wanted to,” Miley clarified, “I mean performing ‘The Best Of Both Worlds’ between ‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ wouldn’t have really made sense.” And she’s not wrong. Stylistically, Hannah would’ve felt a little out of place at a neon-lit twerk fest. But that doesn’t mean the ban wasn’t bizarre—or, frankly, petty.
Miley explained that it still felt “sad” to be cut off from music that featured her voice, her face, and her teenage soul. And yet, she was legally barred from reclaiming it—until August 2024, when the Mouse House finally gave its golden girl a Disney Legend plaque… and permission to sing her own songs again.
Congratulations, Disney, you’ve officially unlocked the same rights you’d give a karaoke bar in Idaho.
For those too young (or too old) to remember the hysteria: Hannah Montana debuted in 2006 and became a rocket-fueled tween pop explosion. The show broke Disney Channel viewership records and turned Miley Cyrus into a household name, charting 20 Hot 100 hits as her alter ego. “He Could Be the One” made it to the Top 10, and that unforgettable theme song? It snuck into the charts too, peaking at No. 92—proof that America loves a double life.
Hannah scored three No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200. And while the wigs, glitter, and Malibu beach house might be history, the songs still slap. So now that Miley’s got the green light, could we see a surprise Hannah Montana medley in her next tour? We wouldn’t put it past her—and honestly, the nostalgia crowd would eat it up.
As crazy as Miley seems to the tabloid crowd (and we love her for it), let’s not forget: she’s also one of the most underrated vocalists of her generation. She’s a powerhouse, a rule-breaker, and yeah—she’s hot. Just don’t expect her to show up in a blonde wig unless she’s doing it on her own damn terms.
