Michael Jackson‘s original studio recording, “Big Boy (One-derful Version),” from 1967, is set for a landmark digital release. Recorded with The Jackson 5 during their inaugural studio session in Chicago’s One-derful studios, this track marks the first time Jackson’s voice was immortalized on tape. Commencing on Wednesday, December 7th, fans have the unique opportunity to own this historic recording in a 48-hour limited digital sale.
The digital release includes various packages. For $25, fans can access the “open edition” package, featuring the track via anotherblock’s player, images of the master tape and contracts, downloadable song stems, and a digital vinyl B-side with “Michael the Lover” and “My Girl,” along with their stems.
For $100, the “limited edition” package offers all the open edition contents, plus newly designed artwork and nine additional tracks and stems from the 1967 Steeltown sessions. This includes “Big Boy (Steeltown Version),” “We Don’t Have to Be Over 21 (To Fall in Love),” and several others, offering a comprehensive glimpse into the early days of The Jackson 5.
This limited-time offer is a collaboration between Recordpool and the Swedish blockchain-based music marketplace, anotherblock. The sale starts at noon ET and will be available globally for 48 hours on the anotherblock website.
Michel D Traore, CEO and co-founder of anotherblock, expressed his excitement, noting, “As an avid MJ fan, the chance to introduce this seminal music piece to the world was instantly appealing. It took us about six months of discussions and planning to present this recording’s history and significance properly.”
Journalist Jake Austen discovered the original studio master recording of “Big Boy (One-derful Version)” in 2009. Another version of “Big Boy,” recorded separately, was released as The Jackson 5’s debut single by Steeltown Records in January 1968.
A portion of the sales proceeds will support the Legacy Foundation, a nonprofit in Lake County, Indiana, Jackson’s birthplace. Katherine Jackson, Michael Jackson’s mother, endorsed the initiative, saying, “This project gives a new digital rhythm to the Jackson family’s early musical works. It’s a testament to the timelessness of the Jacksons’ story and music.”
Traore added, “We are continually exploring new ways to redefine digital ownership in music. This unique format aims to replicate the sensation of owning a physical vinyl record, bringing a classic experience into the digital era.”
