In a candid conversation on the Doomscroll podcast, The 1975’s frontman Matty Healy opened up about how his approach to songwriting has changed over the years. As public fascination with his personal life grew—especially after rumors of a brief relationship with pop icon Taylor Swift—Healy shared that he’s now less interested in writing about fleeting romances and public controversies.
“I used to write a lot about relationships,” Healy said, noting that his fame skyrocketed last year for a variety of reasons. “The only thing I cared about was my work, but I had become more known for things outside of my music.”
This introspection led him to distance himself from writing about “casual romantic liaisons,” which fans speculated could be a reference to his rumored fling with Swift in early 2023. “Honestly, I’d be lying if I made a record about all the gossip or personal stuff people associate with me,” Healy admitted. “I’m just not interested in it.”
The alleged romance between Healy and Swift caught the public’s attention after Healy was seen attending multiple dates on her Eras Tour. The two were also photographed leaving New York’s Electric Lady Studios, fueling further speculation. Though neither Swift nor Healy has confirmed their relationship, fans have been eager to decode possible hints in Swift’s album The Tortured Poets Department, with songs like “Guilty as Sin?” and “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)” being seen as potential nods to Healy.
Despite the rumors, Healy has shifted his focus away from addressing such speculation. “It would feel disingenuous to write songs about something that happened two years ago,” Healy added. “I see other people doing it, and it’s not something I’m interested in.”
Meanwhile, Swift has been breaking records with her new album, The Tortured Poets Department, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. With over 2.6 million sales in its first week alone, the album solidified Swift’s place as one of the top artists of this generation.
As for Healy, he continues to focus on his art while steering clear of the personal gossip that often follows him. His candid reflections on the podcast reveal a maturing artist who’s ready to move past the tabloid drama and focus on his music.
