In an exciting development that had been hinted at for some time, iconic pop queen Madonna has teamed up with British sensation Sam Smith for a daring new track, ‘Vulgar.’ The collaboration seems natural, given the shared penchant for provocative themes, as evidenced by Smith’s chart-topping number ‘Unholy’ with Kim Petras. This song stirred the music industry with its audacious themes, a feature common to Madonna’s career.
Madonna set the tone for the collaboration during the Grammy Awards, introducing Smith and Petras’ performance with the words, “Are you ready for some controversy?” hinting at the song’s daring spirit.
‘Vulgar’ was created with the help of the original team behind ‘Unholy,’ including famed producers Ilya, Cirkut, Omer Fedi, Ryan Tedder, Jimmy Napes, Smith, and Lauren D’elia, who also handles Madonna’s vocal production and engineering.
‘Vulgar’ embraces the controversial essence of Madonna’s introduction, incorporating Smith’s lyric, “You know you’re beautiful when they call you vulgar,” and features an exotic Middle Eastern melody. Yet, it charts new musical territory for both artists, blending rap-style verses over a rhythm reminiscent of Beyonce’s ‘Cozy.’
Madonna adds an element of humor with self-referential lines like, “Boy, get down on your knees because I am Madonna. If you mess with Sam tonight, you’re messing with me, so watch what you say, or I’ll split your banana.”
This release marks Smith’s first new song since their experimental third album ‘Gloria,’ released earlier this year. Smith’s North American tour, aptly named ‘Gloria the Tour,’ commences next month.
Meanwhile, Madonna, following the release of her 50-track career retrospective, ‘Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones,’ is preparing for her worldwide ‘Celebration’ tour, set to kick off in Vancouver next month. ‘Vulgar’ is just one in a series of recent collaborations by Madonna, who has also teamed up with The Weeknd and Christine and the Queens.
