Lorde Drunk-Dials Her Famous Friends on Live Radio and Accidentally Outs a Hangover

So what exactly do you do when you’re a Grammy-winning, alt-pop sorceress named Lorde with a contact list hotter than the Daytona asphalt in August? You ring up your equally iconic friends on live radio and ask the dumbest question imaginable: “Are you sitting or standing?”

And yes — it’s as chaotic as it sounds.

While on BBC Radio 1, Lorde played a little game called Sitting or Standing where she had to guess the posture of her friends before calling them live. Because apparently we’re out of ideas — but also? We live for this kind of absurdity.

Her first call was to the ever-ethereal Gracie Abrams. Lorde guessed sitting. WRONG. Gracie was standing — and adorable about it. “I love you,” she told Lorde mid-confusion. (Honestly, same.)

Next up: Chappell Roan, our “Pink Pony Club” queen — which also happens to be the name of a certain Daytona Beach institution we may or may not have visited once or twice in our party prime. Lorde guessed sitting again. Nope. Chappell was on her feet and bewildered. “Wait… is this live?” Yep, welcome to your radio debut, friend.

But it was Charli XCX who really stole the moment. Not only did she sound like she’d been run over by a disco ball, she answered the phone lying down and hungover. “What is happening?” she moaned, clearly realizing she was on air with mascara from last night still fighting for its life. “Keep lying down,” Lorde laughed. “I owe you.”

It’s giving chaotic good energy.

Of course, these aren’t just random numbers in Lorde’s phone. These are real friendships. Lorde and Charli have had their ups and downs, recently squashing the awkwardness with a collab on “Girl, So Confusing (Remix)” off Charli’s Brat album — and brought the heat live at Coachella. Meanwhile, Chappell has credited Lorde with helping her navigate fame, and Gracie Abrams says Lorde makes her nervous system “regulate differently.” (Therapists: do what you will with that.)

Now Lorde’s gearing up for the release of her next album, Virgin, dropping June 27. The singles “What Was That” and “Man of the Year” are already lighting up TikTok like it’s 2014 Tumblr energy — and yes, people are pairing it with screenshots of toxic texts. It’s like if your heartbreak had a viral soundtrack and a bottle of cheap red wine.
