An imperfectly restored Fender Stratocaster, once owned by Kurt Cobain, famed frontman of the band Nirvana, was auctioned off for an astounding $596,000 at Julien’s Auctions on Saturday. Despite its damaged condition, the massive auction price demonstrates Cobain’s enduring legacy nearly three decades after his passing.
“As the years go by, finding items associated with Kurt Cobain or Nirvana is becoming increasingly challenging. Consequently, these items are among the most sought-after collectibles in the realm of rock music,” stated Darren Julien, CEO of Julien’s Auctions.
Cobain was renowned for frequently smashing his Fender Stratocasters during performances. This particular guitar bears the battle scars of such a moment during the creation of Nirvana’s breakthrough album, Nevermind, in the early 1990s.
The once destroyed guitar was carefully restored and later presented as a gift to Cobain’s friend and fellow musician, Mark Lanegan, from the band Screaming Trees.
A personal message from Cobain to Lanegan can be seen scrawled in silver marker on the body of the guitar, reading, “Hell-o Mark! Love, Your Pal, Kurdt Kobain / Washed up rockstar.” The guitar also bears the signatures of fellow Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl.
“This artifact carries a special significance,” Julien commented.
Adding to the allure of the guitar, the inscription “Boddah Lives” is etched into the neck plate, referencing Cobain’s imaginary childhood friend. Additionally, the guitar case features the phrase “Abort Christ” prominently displayed in white lettering. Despite its damaged and restored state, the guitar’s sale price attests to the enduring impact and reverence for Cobain’s artistic legacy.
