Three decades after the release of Nirvana’s pivotal album ‘In Utero’, bassist Krist Novoselic sat down for a comprehensive chat about the album’s impact, unearthing archived music through AI, and the band’s forward plans. The iconic album, which became the band’s final project before Kurt Cobain’s tragic death, was noted for singles such as ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ and ‘All Apologies’ and has left an enduring impact on rock music.
Novoselic shared his sentiments on the band’s last album, stating, “The album encapsulates a range of emotions— it’s as haunting as it is beautiful.” The album was a commercial and artistic follow-up to their groundbreaking ‘Nevermind’, and according to Novoselic, served as a testament to their evolution.
Discussing the production side, Novoselic recalled Cobain’s admiration for producer Steve Albini. The trio had been aiming for a different sound and achieved it with Albini’s engineering capabilities. “Kurt was captivated by Albini’s work,” he noted. “Getting into the big leagues was tough, especially for Kurt, but the album was our statement.”
Recently announced, Nirvana will be issuing a deluxe 30th-anniversary version of ‘In Utero’. Novoselic is particularly excited about the live tracks, enhanced using AI technology. “We’ve used AI to restore old audio tapes and got an amazing mix. It brings life back to those performances,” he said.
When asked about employing AI to revive unreleased tracks, Novoselic found the concept intriguing. “That’s an avenue worth exploring with Dave [Grohl] and Pat [Smear]. AI could redefine the future of archived music,” he opined.
As for any leftover Nirvana sketches or demos, Novoselic believes that’s a dialogue that needs to happen. “The question is how much of AI-revived Nirvana would still be Nirvana,” he mused.
When queried about what future directions the band might have taken had Cobain remained alive, Novoselic was introspective. “That’s a hard question. Each of us continued with our own projects, but Nirvana had a unique chemistry. I can only speculate.”
He also expressed his wish to reunite with surviving members. “When it feels authentic, we come together to honor Kurt’s memory and our shared history. There’s some unreleased stuff we’ve jammed on, and I should talk to Dave about it.”
The 30th-anniversary edition of ‘In Utero’ is set for release on October 27, order your copy HERE.
