You ever write something so stupid you think it just might work? Well, Kesha did — and it made her a household name.
Back in 2009, a time when MySpace still had relevance and Auto-Tune was considered a personality trait, Kesha dropped “Tik Tok,” a glitter-bomb of party pop that became the unofficial soundtrack for brushing your teeth with Jack Daniel’s. But according to the star herself, the song was never meant to be taken seriously… which honestly explains a lot.
“When I was writing ‘Tik Tok,’ it was weird, because the dumber it got, the better it got,” Kesha told Jennifer Hudson in a recent sit-down. “Which was confusing, because I like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent human being. But it just got dumber and dumber and better and better.”
So, naturally, she hated it. “When I listened to the final product, I was like, ‘This is too dumb,’” she admitted.
And then the universe laughed — because that “too dumb” track skyrocketed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and camped out there for nine weeks straight. Not only did it mark her solo debut, but it helped her album Animal debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, too.
Now, 15 years and several legal battles later (including the very public split from Dr. Luke), Kesha’s back in control with a new label and her sixth studio album, cryptically titled . (yes, a period). According to Kesha, this is her “coming home” moment — creatively speaking. “It’s been all of my vision, all of my words… Really coming back home to myself and feeling what freedom really looks like, feels like, sounds like,” she said while tearing up.
Look, we’re not monsters. We want the best for Kesha. But if you only know her from reality show cameos, glitter face paint, and tracks that sound like a synth exploded inside a Red Bull can, you might also find it hard to believe she’s trying to be taken seriously as an artist now. Still, respect where it’s due: reclaiming your voice — even if it once rhymed “meat” with “pedicure on our toes” — is no small feat.
