In an unexpected move, rap powerhouses Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem have unveiled a fresh, drill-driven track titled ‘The Hillbillies,’ which creatively incorporates a sample from Bon Iver’s 2020 hit ‘PDLIF’. Dive into the new release below.
Marking their tenth artistic collaboration, following the success of Grammy-decorated ‘Family Ties’ and 2021’s chart-toppers ‘Range Brothers’ and ‘Vent’, the duo dropped ‘The Hillbillies’ on May 30th, accompanied by a captivating music video.
The intriguing track breathes new life into ‘PDLIF’, a song by Bon Iver that notably samples Alabaster dePlume’s ‘Visit Croatia’. ‘The Hillbillies’ weaves in elements of UK drill-style hi-hats and Jersey club bass, underpinning the distinctive rap interplay between Lamar and Keem: “She claims she’s celibate, I keep hoping (she isn’t) / She says she’s in love with me, I’ll stay open (I’ll attempt).”
The video, filmed within the confines of LA’s Dodger Stadium, the lavish interior of a private jet, and amidst the retail bounty of London, teases fans with a surprise cameo. Tyler, The Creator momentarily steals the spotlight, flaunting a button marked with “Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival 2023” and indicating Dodger Stadium, sparking conjecture that Lamar and Keem may be future headliners at Tyler’s annual LA festival.
