The scenic Napa Valley will resonate with the echoes of jazz this Labor Day weekend as it hosts the esteemed Blue Note Jazz Festival Presents: The Black Radio Experience. Under the curatorial eye of Grammy-winning jazz icon Robert Glasper, this festival brings an intimate celebration of African-American musical heritage to the lush landscapes of Napa from August 30 to September 1.
Unlike larger festivals, The Black Radio Experience offers an intimate setting at The Meritage Resort & Spa, contrasting with sprawling events like Las Vegas’s Friends in Lovers festival. This year’s lineup boasts illustrious artists including John Legend, Jill Scott, and André 3000, alongside talented performers like Andra Day, Common, Nile Rodgers, and Ledisi.
Alex Kurland, Blue Note’s Director of Programming, emphasizes the unique ambiance of this year’s festival, “It’s designed to be a boutique experience, focusing on quality and intimacy, reflecting Robert Glasper’s unique artistic vision.”
The festival’s roots trace back to its 2011 debut in New York, marking the 30th anniversary of the iconic Blue Note Jazz Club. Since its inception, the event has grown, with the 2022 festival taking place at the historic Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena.
This year’s edition will expand across two stages and a special wine cave venue, providing a backdrop of Napa Valley’s renowned vineyards. Culinary delights will be abundant, with Chef Darryl Bell offering Kansas City-inspired barbecue fused with Michelin-level expertise at the ‘In the Vineyard’ Stateline Road Smokehouse.
For those looking to indulge in the full experience, hotel packages range from $2,250 to $3,400 per person. General admission passes start at $499, with sales commencing on May 16, 2024. For more details, visit the official festival website.
