Two decades of dedication to philanthropy was celebrated in grandeur at a New York City gala on Friday, July 14. The charitable organization, the Shawn Carter Foundation, established by music mogul Jay-Z and his mother Gloria Carter, took the occasion to the next level by successfully raising an impressive sum of $20 million.
This substantial fund is destined to assist those grappling with socioeconomic challenges, enabling them to pursue higher education and break the cycle of poverty. The foundation’s black-tie event, hosted at the city’s Pier Sixty, marked its 20th anniversary, and was graced by numerous dignitaries from the music, sports, business, and entertainment industries.
The star-studded guest list was, naturally, headlined by Jay-Z and Gloria Carter. Music icon Beyoncé, Jay-Z’s wife, was also present, sharing her experience of the night through a series of Instagram posts, including a glimpse of her stunning gown and a humorous video montage set to the trending TikTok track, “My Husband”.
A variety of other notable guests made an appearance, with names such as DJ Khaled, Lil Uzi Vert, Meek Mill, Babyface, Miguel, Tinashe, A$AP Ferg, and Saint Jhn. The event also welcomed business and sports leaders like Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, and Fanatics founder Michael Rubin. Accompanying them were a collection of well-known figures like Regina Hall, Chazz Palminteri, Robinson Cano, Dez Bryant, Angie Martinez, Corey Gamble, Tamika Mallory, Zane Lowe, Ebro Darden, among others.
Over its two-decade tenure, the Shawn Carter Foundation has continuously committed to serving underprivileged youth and families hailing from marginalized communities. It has initiated various programs such as providing college scholarships, creating study abroad opportunities, and facilitating wealth-building strategies.
Before the gala, an announcement was made about a promising collaboration between the Shawn Carter Foundation and Robert Kraft’s Foundation to Combat Antisemitism. Together, they pledged $1 million towards opposing nationwide book bans and upholding educational freedom. The cause saw further contributions of $500,000 each from Fanatics and Live Nation, which will facilitate book donations, legal support, marketing aid, and publishing help, thus safeguarding creatives and institutions affected by the widespread book ban.
