Gorillaz fans, grab your banana peels and dusty vinyls—it’s happening again. Damon Albarn just confirmed that the world’s most animated band (literally) is dropping a new album sometime in 2025. And if you thought their last few records were genre-bending rollercoasters, this one might just launch us straight into orbit.
In a recent interview with French magazine Les Inrockuptibles, Albarn casually mentioned he’s “finishing a new Gorillaz album,” which he says will arrive before the end of the year. Oh, and by the way—he’s also wrapping up The Magic Flute II: La Malédiction, his sequel to Mozart’s original opera from 1791. Because when you’re Damon Albarn, you don’t just write synth-laced bangers—you resurrect 18th-century classical works and sprinkle in a little Kraftwerk for flavor.
“One opera and one new Gorillaz album seems like enough for 2025,” Albarn told the publication. Honestly, yeah—most of us can barely handle one group chat and a caffeine habit.
Jamie Hewlett, the band’s iconic visual mastermind, chimed in too. According to DMs shared by a Gorillaz-focused IG account, Hewlett confirmed: “Yes, the new album is coming out this year.” Another source reported Albarn telling a French podcast the record would be done “in six more weeks.”
The band’s last album, Cracker Island, dropped in 2023 and proved these genre-hopping legends still know how to shake up a playlist. It peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album. But it’s been quiet since—no tours, no cryptic cartoon antics, just Albarn lurking in opera houses.
If The Magic Flute II is any indication, we’re about to enter a whole new era of Gorillaz. Albarn says the inspiration for the opera came from—you guessed it—Kraftwerk. Because of course it did. This sequel to a Mozart masterpiece is now a synth-fueled fever dream that could only exist in the mind of the same guy who gave us Clint Eastwood and Feel Good Inc.
