The Broadway musical Tammy Faye—a vibrant retelling of the life of the scandalous televangelist and camp icon Tammy Faye Bakker—will be closing much earlier than anticipated. After debuting on November 14, the $22 million production will take its final bow on December 8, following just 24 preview and 29 regular performances.
With music composed by the legendary Elton John and lyrics penned by Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, the show also featured a book by acclaimed playwright James Graham (Ink, Finding Neverland). Despite its success during its 2022 London premiere, the musical struggled to gain traction in New York, with poor reviews and disappointing box office returns cited as major hurdles.
Housed at the iconic Palace Theater—one of the largest venues on Broadway—the show played to 37% empty seats during its final week, earning it the dubious distinction of being Broadway’s lowest-grossing production during that period. Critics, such as The New York Times, described the musical as a “tonal mishmash” and “bland,” a sharp contrast to the warm reception it received overseas.
Not everyone agreed with the harsh reviews. Former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe took to Instagram, calling the production a “beautifully moving and soulful telling of Tammy Faye Bakker’s story.” The singer shared an opening night photo alongside Sir Elton John and Rosanne Cash, praising the musical as a “tour de force.”
Co-creator Jake Shears expressed gratitude on Instagram, reflecting on the decade-long journey to bring Tammy Faye to the stage. “These last 12 years (and 12 weeks) have been an unforgettable ride,” Shears wrote. “I’m immensely proud of our work and deeply honored to have collaborated with such a talented cast and crew.”
Elton John also acknowledged the challenges and triumphs of the short Broadway run. “It’s been a true honor to collaborate with everyone involved,” John said, lauding the “extraordinary talent and hard work” of the team. John, a seasoned composer in musical theater, previously brought hits like The Lion King, Billy Elliot: The Musical, and Aida to Broadway’s brightest stages.
The musical explored Tammy Faye Bakker’s larger-than-life persona, her rise and fall as a televangelist, and her impact on religious broadcasting and pop culture. Known for her extravagant makeup, over-the-top style, and tumultuous personal life, Tammy Faye remains a fascinating figure in American history.
As the curtain closes on this ambitious project, fans and creators alike will remember it as a bold and heartfelt attempt to bring Tammy Faye’s story to life. Meanwhile, Elton John and Jake Shears will continue to be celebrated for their contributions to musical theater and the arts.
