Ed Sheeran unexpectedly pulled double duty at his latest concert in Landover, Maryland, substituting for Khalid who unfortunately had a car mishap. Scheduled as the supporting act for Sheeran’s gig at FedExField over the weekend, Khalid couldn’t perform due to his accident.
Instead of disappointing fans, the British singer-songwriter, known for hits like “Shape of You”, stepped up to the plate. He commenced the concert ahead of schedule, not just as the main act but also as the opener in place of Khalid.
As Billboard reported, Sheeran addressed the audience saying, “He’s recovering, and we wish him the best.” He humorously added that he would clarify his unusual early start after each song, to avoid confusing late-comers expecting a typical concert format.
Sheeran’s impromptu opening segment featured acoustic renditions from his latest album, “Subtract”. These tunes are usually absent from his main setlist during his ongoing Mathematics Tour.
Adding a touch of humor to the night, Sheeran joked about his two costume changes: switching from a white to a black t-shirt. “I’m really pulling out the stops tonight,” he chuckled, also expressing his delight in being able to see the audience as he started the show in daylight rather than the usual pitch black.
The “Young Dumb & Broke” singer Khalid, 25, has not yet released any statement about the accident. He is slated to resume his opening act duties for Sheeran’s upcoming show at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts this Friday.
