🎸 Drummer Trade Deadline: Rock Edition
Who needs sports when the music industry is out here making trades like it’s the NBA draft?
In the most “you gotta be kidding me” news of the week, Foo Fighters and Nine Inch Nails have decided to swap stick-slingers like it’s a fantasy league. Josh Freese, who took over Foo duty after the tragic loss of Taylor Hawkins (RIP, legend), is heading back to the industrial chaos of Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails. Meanwhile, Ilan Rubin—a NIN mainstay since 2009—has taken his talents to Grohlville.
No official press conference, no teary farewells. Just a couple of social media posts and BOOM—your favorite bands just did a drummer draft behind your back.
Rubin’s move was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, and while no one’s calling it “permanent,” we’re getting the vibe this isn’t a one-night stand. Rubin’s resume is stacked anyway—Paramore, Angels & Airwaves, and even Danny freaking Elfman. The man could probably keep rhythm during an earthquake.
As for Freese, his exit from the Foos wasn’t bitter, just surprising. In classic pro fashion, he said he wasn’t mad—just shocked. We’ve all been there, Josh. The ol’ “we’re going in a different direction” breakup speech hits hard, even when it comes with a thank-you note. The Foos gave him a classy shoutout, calling his playing “thunderous wizardry.” Respect.
Freese is clearly stoked to return to NIN. “We crushed it every night,” he wrote. And honestly? He’s not wrong. Say what you want about Reznor’s brooding genius, but that band is tight. Plus, Freese promised the upcoming NIN shows are gonna melt your face off. We believe him.
Look, as long as these bands keep making real rock music—and we’re not talking about the algorithm-chasing fluff flooding your Spotify feed—they can swap drummers, bassists, or even lead singers for all we care. We just want the thunder to keep rolling. And we’ll take any excuse to get back in the pit.
🙏 And while we’re rocking through the lineup changes, let’s take a moment to honor the great Taylor Hawkins. Gone way too soon, but never forgotten. His energy is irreplaceable, and his legacy lives in every beat that follows.
