The four-day musical celebration, Rockville Festival, in Daytona concluded Sunday with a significant fan turnout eagerly anticipating performances from Deftones and Tool.
Chris and Rae Newman, a Melbourne-based married couple, were among those attending the festival for the first time to watch the two headline acts. Rae, a long-time fan of Deftones, expressed her excitement, “I’ve been following Deftones since my high school days. I catch them whenever they tour Florida.”
She also suggested Deftones’ albums “White Pony” and “Saturday Night Wrist” to those unfamiliar with the band. Chris, on the other hand, was drawn to the festival mainly for Tool, “Growing up, both my uncle and I listened to them. I thought it’d be cool to experience them live,” he said.
Even a hot day interspersed with a spot of rain couldn’t deter the enthusiasts from soaking in the music across various stages, posing for pictures at band displays, and even participating in spontaneous mosh pits.
Point North’s performance on the Octane Stage around 1:20 p.m. incited a lively mosh pit. Fans jumped, shoved, and kicked up dust as bubbles filled the air from a spectator’s bubble gun.
South Florida resident, Tim Becerra, watching the spectacle, shared his passion for mosh pits. “It’s thrilling and fun. It’s about letting go and sharing a good time with your fellow festival-goers,” he advised first-timers, “Stay hydrated and ensure to help anyone who falls.”
The Rockville Festival wasn’t only about the 95 performances over four days, but also a grand avenue for observing diverse people. A medley of clothing, hairstyles, makeup, and accessories representing a wide array of genres and styles could be seen – from mohawks with spiked vests and novelty hats to band tees and more.
Festival-goer Charlie Christopher, sporting a Guns N’ Roses T-shirt and a Tool hat, proudly draped a Peruvian flag over his shoulders like a cape, symbolizing his personal heritage.
Chamie McCurry, CMO for event promoter Danny Wimmer Presents, shared with The News-Journal via email that the festival was expected to draw over 170,000 attendees. McCurry expressed satisfaction with the festival, emphasizing that fans were having a great time while staying hydrated and safe.
No information was disclosed regarding any incidents or injuries during the event. However, plans for Rockville 2024 are already underway. “We’re preparing for 2024 and will be making an announcement regarding the dates within the next month, followed by the lineup reveal by the year-end,” McCurry added.
