Cypress Hill with a symphony orchestra? Yeah, that joke from The Simpsons just became legendary reality.
Hip-hop history has been made, and it only took 28 years and a joke from a ‘90s cartoon to make it happen. Cypress Hill’s mind-melting live performance with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall is finally getting an official release as a concert film and live album—because when you order a symphony “possibly while high,” you better deliver.
From Cartoon Gag to Hip-Hop Reality
Back in 1996, The Simpsons dropped a throwaway joke that has since become one of the most iconic hip-hop pop culture moments. In the episode Homerpalooza, Cypress Hill was accused of “possibly while high” hiring the London Symphony Orchestra—a scenario that was so ridiculous, it HAD to happen in real life.
Flash forward to July 10, 2024, and the stoner prophecy was fulfilled. The legendary Cypress Hill took over London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall, performing their 1993 classic album Black Sunday (you know, the one with Insane in the Brain) backed by a full symphony orchestra.
Now, the full performance is getting an official release, so fans can finally witness this genre-bending, orchestral weed rap masterpiece in all its glory.
When & Where to Watch
🎬 Concert Film Release: Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra: Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall
📅 In Theaters: March 30, 31 & April 2
📀 Live Album Release: June 6 via Mercury Records
The band has already dropped a teaser video of their symphonic version of “Illusions”, proving that even the hardest-hitting beats sound absolutely insane when backed by violins and a full brass section.
B-Real’s Take: “It’s a Trip”
For B-Real, this performance was a long time coming—and an absolute trip to witness.
“It’s been something that we’ve talked about for many years since The Simpsons episode first aired. So it’s very special for us. And it’s coming off the heels of our 30th anniversary for our Black Sunday album. We’ve played a lot of historical venues throughout our career, but nothing as prestigious as this.”
Arranger and conductor Troy Miller—who had the impossible job of making hip-hop bangers translate to orchestral grandeur—called the project “truly unique and mesmerizing.”
“The band gave me free rein on the arrangements, and we made something truly unique and mesmerizing – what a sublime collaboration!”
Why This Matters
This isn’t just another “rappers with an orchestra” gig. This is hip-hop legitimacy taken to the highest level. It’s proof that the genre can stand shoulder to shoulder with classical music, legendary venues, and high art—and still stay true to its roots.
Whether you’re a hip-hop purist, a classical music nerd, or just someone who loves seeing history unfold, this isn’t just a concert—it’s a cultural moment.
