Renowned musician Carlos Santana stirred up a storm of criticism after making contentious remarks about gender identity during a New Jersey performance last month.
In the now widely circulated video from his concert at the Hard Rock Live at the Etess Arena in Atlantic City, the 76-year-old guitarist shared his views saying, “A woman remains a woman, and a man, a man.”
In the same breath, Santana openly supported comedian Dave Chappelle, who faced backlash in 2021 for his comments on the transgender community in a Netflix special. “Before birth, our identities are defined,” Santana stated, hinting at a preordained binary view of gender.
Feedback on social media post-concert was swift, with many expressing their dismay. Concert attendees described their discomfort, with one Reddit user mentioning, “There was an odd juxtaposition of him emphasizing our uniqueness and value afterward.”
Many criticized Santana for his divisive stand. A Twitter user wrote, “Why let hate overshadow such a legendary career?” Another commented, “Such a reputation tarnished by this one event.”
It’s worth noting that last year, the iconic guitarist had a health scare, collapsing during a Michigan show. He had to postpone several performances of his Miraculous Supernatural Tour with Earth, Wind & Fire due to health concerns but made a strong comeback a month later.
