Amidst the urgent search for the lost “Titan” submarine with his stepfather, billionaire Hamish Harding, on board, Brian Szasz sought comfort in music, attending his favorite band, Blink-182’s concert in San Diego.
The “Titan,” an OceanGate submarine carrying five tourists, including Harding, on a voyage to the Titanic’s 1912 shipwreck site off Canada’s coast, lost communication with its support ship on June 19. The submarine disappeared about an hour and forty-five minutes into its descent in the North Atlantic Ocean. Other passengers in the ill-fated submersible included Pakistani entrepreneur Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, OceanGate founder and CEO Stockton Rush, and renowned French diver Paul-Henry Nargeolet.
Szasz, an audio engineer and Blink-182 enthusiast, was seen at the band’s concert the same day the “Titan” submarine vanished. He shared images from the concert and defended his attendance on social media. In a since-deleted post, Szasz wrote, “I might be here at the Blink-182 concert while my family is in a crisis, but they’d understand. Music has always been my refuge during hard times.”
Szasz also reached out to Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge via Twitter on June 20, expressing that he was seeking support at the concert given his stepfather’s current situation. The following day, Szasz shared a photo of himself with DeLonge.
On Facebook, Szasz shared hopes for the success of the rescue mission attempting to locate his stepfather and the rest of the submarine crew. The latest news from the search operation reported intermittent “banging” sounds from the last known location of the “Titan.” The submarine crew reportedly heard these sounds every 30 minutes on June 20, then four hours later, after deploying more sonar devices.
The “Titan” is equipped with a four-day emergency oxygen supply. However, it is estimated that the remaining oxygen for the five missing passengers may last only for 24 hours. OceanGate emphasized that their “entire focus [was] on the crewmembers in the submersible and their families” in a recent statement.
