A major development has unfolded in the notorious 1996 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur. On Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, Las Vegas authorities took Duane “Keffe D” Davis into custody in connection with the drive-by shooting that ended Shakur’s life.
While the specific charges against Davis remain undisclosed, sources suggest that an indictment announcement is imminent. Davis, in his 2019 memoir titled “Compton Street Legend,” disclosed his presence in the Cadillac from which the fatal shots were fired on that fateful night.
Authorities intensified their investigation earlier this year, conducting a raid on Davis’s wife’s residence, where they retrieved items directly linked to the murder of Tupac Shakur.
In his memoir, Davis sheds light on a confidential 2010 meeting with law enforcement, where he divulged details about the crime. He candidly admitted to his role and hinted at his collaboration with the authorities to avoid life imprisonment on drug-related charges.
The tragic night of Sept. 7, 1996, saw Shakur alongside Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight in a BMW when a white Cadillac rolled up, unleashing a hail of bullets. Shakur succumbed to his injuries a week later.
Previously, Davis publicly stated that Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, his nephew, was involved in the shooting, linking it to a casino altercation earlier that evening. Anderson was subsequently killed in Compton, California, two years later.
Shakur, with his chart-topping album “All Eyez on Me,” had carved a lasting legacy in the rap scene. His music and influence remain significant, even amidst his unresolved beef with rap counterpart Biggie Smalls, a.k.a. Notorious B.I.G.
Retired detective Greg Kading, who delved deep into the Shakur case and authored a book on the subject, voiced his anticipation for Davis’s arrest. Citing Davis’s public revelations, especially in his memoir, Kading believes that it has finally given authorities the leverage to proceed.
In the face of these revelations, it remains evident that Duane “Keffe D” Davis is the sole surviving link to the dark night that took Tupac Shakur’s life.
