Atlantic Records, an iconic label with a legacy spanning 75 years, is commemorating its rich history with an expansive campaign showcasing its monumental artist roster. From the pioneering sounds of Ray Charles to the contemporary beats of Lizzo, Atlantic’s imprint on music is undeniable.
A mere loan of $10,000 in 1947 by Ahmet Ertegun’s dentist set the stage for Ertegun and Herb Abramson to establish what would become a leading record label, Atlantic Records. Throughout the ages, the label has been home to trailblazers such as Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, and Matchbox Twenty, and modern legends like Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, and Twenty One Pilots.
The celebration, a year-long festivity, is led by Atlantic Records chairman/CEO Craig Kallman. Under his supervision, the label has launched 90 classic titles, including many in unique vinyl variants such as crystal clear and colored versions. Featured among the 75th-anniversary releases are timeless albums like John Coltrane’s “Olé Coltrane”, Phil Collins’ “No Jacket Required”, and recent chart-toppers like Mars’ “24K Magic” and Lizzo’s “Cuz I Love You”.
Kallman, an integral part of Atlantic for over three decades, embarked on this venture with the collaboration of Rhino Entertainment. The project saw him diving deep into Atlantic’s vast catalogue. His objective? Capturing the essence and diversity of the label’s transformative history. “Selecting records that defined the label and its culture was both challenging and exhilarating,” Kallman shared.
This musical journey wasn’t confined to 75 titles. With the richness of Atlantic’s legacy, Kallman found himself extending the release list to 90. “Choosing just 75 was an overwhelming task. We decided to go a bit beyond,” he reflected.
But the anniversary has more in store. Atlantic has teamed up with Acoustic Sounds, a premium audiophile label, to launch 75 classic albums in enhanced vinyl and SACD formats. Additionally, Vinyl Me Please, a vinyl subscription platform, is on board for exclusive offerings, featuring records like Ray Charles’ “Ray Charles in Person”.
Adding a modern twist, the anniversary includes a series of remixes available for online streaming. These remixes include modern takes on classics, such as DJ Spinna’s rendition of Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly”. Moreover, a deluxe coffee table book, shedding light on Atlantic’s history with captivating imagery and insightful essays, is set to debut in 2024.
