Clarence Avant, celebrated as the “Black Music Godfather” for his remarkable contribution spanning decades in the music world, passed away in his Los Angeles residence at the age of 92.
Avant, originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, set the benchmark in New York’s music industry by managing legends like Sarah Vaughan, Freddie Hubbard, and Bill Withers, the soulful voice behind “Ain’t No Sunshine.” His innovative ventures included founding one of America’s first Black-owned radio stations, KAGB-FM, and launching Sussex and Tabu record companies.
The North Carolina maestro connected with the S.O.S. Band, which led him to play a pivotal role in the flourishing careers of dynamic duos: Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and Reid with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. His imprint on the music scene was further underscored when he became the promoter for Michael Jackson’s iconic “Bad” tour.
Avant’s groundbreaking achievements include a stint as Motown’s chairman in 1993, followed by a distinguished role on the International Management Board for PolyGram. His influence wasn’t limited to just music. Avant’s rich tapestry of connections spanned presidential circles with figures like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, and extended to titans like Oprah Winfrey and even the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali.
Avant’s profound legacy in music and beyond earned him accolades like the Grammy Salute to Industry Icons award, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a plethora of other honors.
His life and unparalleled journey were beautifully captured in Netflix’s documentary “The Black Godfather” in 2019, with notable personalities like Snoop Dogg, Lionel Richie, and Jamie Foxx offering their tributes.
Survived by his daughter Nicole Avant, a film producer and former U.S. Ambassador, and son Alex Avant, a talent representative in LA, Clarence Avant’s legend will continue to inspire generations. The music world lost an irreplaceable gem but cherishes a legacy that’s nothing short of extraordinary.
