Composer Crashes Out of White Lotus After Epic Final Fight With Mike White—Here’s What Really Went Down
Just when you thought The White Lotus couldn’t get more dramatic, the chaos jumps off screen.
Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, the Emmy-hoarding mastermind behind that jungle-thumping, nightmare-lounge-core score, has officially checked out. That’s right—season 3 will be his swan song after what he calls the “last fight forever” with series creator Mike White.
Apparently, the tension’s been simmering since season one. And by “tension,” we mean full-on rock-band-style artistic warfare. Tapia de Veer told The New York Times that scoring White Lotus felt like being in a band “where the guitar player doesn’t understand the singer at all.” (Translation: brilliant chaos.)
The now-legendary composer says producers wanted the score to be more “upbeat” and “less experimental.” So naturally, he whipped up a fever dream of Thai gongs, a saw u violin, and an Italian accordion he couldn’t even play—because why not? The result? “Enlightenment,” season 3’s highly divisive theme that’s got fans either vibing hard or throwing fruit at their TVs.
And here’s the kicker: He had a plan to bring back the classic “ool-loo-loo-loo” vocals from seasons 1 and 2 in a long version of the theme. It would’ve been glorious. But Mike White cut it. “He wasn’t happy about that,” Tapia de Veer said. “We already had our last fight forever.” Oof.
Now, with the final episode of season 3 landing this Sunday (April 6), we’ve got questions. Did you stick it out through all 3 seasons? Are you team OG vocals or riding for the chaos of season 3’s soundscape?
No matter where you stand on the White Lotus theme wars, one thing’s for sure: Tapia de Veer didn’t just compose background music—he set the vibe on fire and walked away with the match still lit.
Speaking of chaos and beauty—festival season is here. If you’re vibing with the wild energy of White Lotus, you’ll feel right at home in the mosh pit.
